You Have the Right to...

The Seattle Times has an interesting article about a shift in the publishing industry regarding "out of print" books and author's rights.
According to the article, the typical publishing contract includes language that defines a book as being "out of print" if sales dip below a certain level. When a book is designated as "out of print," rights to the book revert back to the author.
However, with the rise of Print on Demand publishing, publishers are seeing less reason to take these books out of print. The Author's Guild is sounding the alarm that this could dramatically (and negatively) affect author's rights to their own work. We report, you decide.

Best American Non-Required Reading

Congratulations to Kevin A. Gonzalez, whose short story, "Loteria," was recently selected for publication in the 2007 Best American Non-Required Reading series. "Loteria" first appeared in our 2006, Latina/Latino issue.

Indiana University Writer's Conference

Our friends over at the Indiana University Writer's Conference (now in its 67th year!) have put together a stellar lineup of writers this summer. Heather McHugh, Lee Martin, Khaled Mattawa, Matthew Klam, Catherine Bowman, Nicholas Dawidoff, Crystal Wilkinson, and Adam Langer will all be holding classes and/or workshops. The conference is a good opportunity to rub shoulders (elbows?) with like-minded individuals of the writerly persuasion and get some top-notch instruction from some very talented teachers. The conference runs from June 10th-15th. Check it out.

29.1 On It's Way!

We just sent our newest issue, 29.1, to the printers and it should be in mailboxes and newsstands within weeks.
