One of my favorite writers, Martha Southgate (The Fall of Rome is awesome!), wrote an interesting essay in the New York Times Review of Books about the unique challenges faced by Black writers who try to build a career beyond a second or third novel. Southgate's piece also spawned a lively response from Ishmael Reed and some other writers in the Times' letter section. It's kind of spicy--check it out. --Abdel
