One of my favorite writers,
Martha Southgate (
The Fall of Rome is awesome!), wrote an interesting
essay in the New York Times Review of Books about the unique challenges faced by Black writers who try to build a career beyond a second or third novel. Southgate's piece also spawned a lively
response from Ishmael Reed and some other writers in the Times' letter section. It's kind of spicy--check it out.
